Agenda Descriptions for Friday, June 5

Time Session
9:00 AM  - 10:15 AM Use of the GS1 System in Fresh Foods…It's Growing!
In 2008 the Produce industry announced its Produce Traceability Initiative based on GS1 standards; also acceptance and use of the GS1 DataBar on loose produce expanded. Learn how produce and other fresh food industries are leveraging the GS1 System to support accurate product identification and traceability needs.
Speaker: Dan Vache, Vice President, Supply Chain Management, United Fresh Produce Association
AS2 Data Communication for Collaborative Commerce
The AS2 (Applicability Statement 2) data communications protocol continues to gain a foothold as companies look for secure, tested technologies for data communication. What is AS2? How is it used in GS1? What are the types of issues that need to be addressed when implementing? What have companies learned when implementing this protocol? What additional capabilities do AS3 and AS4 offer? Get the answers to these and other questions at this session.
Speakers: David Darnell, President, Systrends
WORKSHOP: Supplier and Retailer Collaboration through the VICS BOL
Attendees will learn how to use the VICS BOL to meet today’s supply chain requirements as it relates to shipment visibility, accurate appointment scheduling and the leveraging of the carrier and vendor EDI data for inbound planning and receiving. Critical parts of the VICS Standard BOL Guideline will be discussed along with acceptable modifications, optional features and creating the standard GS1 17 Digit BOL number. The use of the VICS BOL is a critical piece within the supply chain to help enable shipment visibility and operational efficiencies that translates into lower costs, higher in stocks and reduced invoice payment discrepancies.
Speaker: Joe Spreitzer, Sr. Manager, Supply Chain Technology, Target

Meeting & Exceeding Retail Requirements
Costs associated with non-compliance with retailer guidelines can no longer be buried in the product pricing or written off as a cost of doing business. Today’s tight economic times requires that products are available to the consumer at lowest landed cost. This session will discuss the metrics that should be employed, and business practices that will meet or exceed retailer's expectations. Meeting retailer guidelines will result in improved supply chain effectiveness and efficiency, while having a positive impact on sustainability.
Speakers: Katy Keane, Vice President, Transportation Services, Big Lots
Speakers: Stores, Inc.
Speakers: Norman Katz, President, Katzscan, Inc.
Speakers: Andrea Smith, Manager MIS, Lord & Taylor

9:00 AM - 11:45 AM WORKSHOP: GDSN: Building a Strong Business Case

What will be the costs? This interactive workshop will help answer these questions and more. Come learn from experts about the best practices, models and tools used to develop a compelling, fact-based business case for data synchronization.
Speakers: Matthew Deeter, President, Deeterwerks, LLC

  WORKSHOP: Package Measurement Skills
Are the terms "Default Front" and "Natural Base" part of your organization's vocabulary? If not, then plan to attend this workshop. Despite industry studies that show most synchronized product information contains data errors, accurate product measurement is not difficult. The majority of dimensional problems are caused by the incorrect interpretation of the GDSN Package Measurement Rules. This session will incorporate classroom instruction with hands-on experience to demonstrate the package measurement rules and their application. An open book evaluation will ensure your understanding of the concepts. Assistance will be provided to ensure concepts are mastered and questions are answered.
Speaker: Rich Richardson, Director Global Standards, GS1 US
WORKSHOP: EPC: Building a Strong Business Case
You have been designated to lead the implementation program for EPC/RFID. Where do you start? What do you need to know? How do you build your business case?
Speaker: Michele Southall, Director Community Development, GS1 US
10:30 AM - 11:45 AM Current Business Trends in Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Outsourcing
Hear a firsthand account of a business that leveraged a service partner to deliver their EDI functionality. In today’s current business climate, companies are scrutinizing areas for cost savings. Review the steps leading to the decision on whether or not to outsource EDI. The session will cover evaluation criteria for deciding which part of their EDI process to outsource; the opportunities made available through outsourcing; how to find a provider with the "right fit" for their needs; cost reduction strategies; and a model for cost analysis. This is a "must attend" for those considering outsourcing vs. keeping their EDI operations internal.
Speaker: Ann Arena, Director of Merchandise Management Systems, Spencer Gifts LLC
New to the Foodservice Menu…Complete and Accurate Information
The foodservice industry continues to move ahead with its acceptance and implementation of GS1 standards to support its goal of accurate product information. Suppliers, distributors and operators aspire to design, operate and manage lean supply chains and collaborate with their partners; learn how the GS1 System supports these goals.
Speakers: James Klass, Principal, Booz & Company
Speakers: Johan Sauer, President, Sauer & Associates
Speakers: Brenda Lloyd, Director - Equipment Distribution, & Systems,
Speakers: UFPC, LLC
The Device that Used to be your Mobile Phone
Mobile handsets can now function as a 1D and 2D barcode scanner, an RFID reader, and an electronic wallet, thus redefining how consumers will interact with brands in the future. This session will explore the current state of the market, describe key global business and technology trends effecting adoption and implementation, review next generation applications such as mobile advertising, promotions, information services, purchase, and payment., and discuss the emerging business models, processes, and strategies being piloted by early adopters.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and ITDS Working Together on ACE
U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) new International Trade Data System (ITDS) may leverage the use of commercial standards including GS1 standards for product identification and classification as it moves to simplifying the filing of documents and information by exporters. If your firm imports goods into the U.S. or exports products to the U.S. you will want to attend this session to learn what the future holds.
